Wes’ Favorite Grilled Hamburger Recipe

In case you missed it live on the news Monday night at 6 & 7 p.m….here is one of my favorite ways to make hamburgers on the grill…

I start with  about four pounds of ground beef, I like the 80/20 mix, but I also like whatever is on sale.  From there, dump the raw meat into large bowl and mix the following:

2 to 3 cups Italian Bread Crumbs

2 to 3 eggs

1 to 2 cups worcestershire sauce

1 to 2 cups Shredded Cheese blend(Romano, Asiago, Parmesan)

WITH YOUR HANDS…mix everything together until well blended.  Make the meat into patties to suit your preference and grill to your liking.

The amounts of ingredients vary depending on what you like.  You can also add a diced onion or even some dice peppers.

I know this recipe if very similar to meatloaf…but you don’t cook meatloaf on the grill!  I borrowed this recipe from on old family friend who can cook like nobody’s business!  Thank you Romanos!

Watch The Weather Live From My Backyard Monday

While most of you have the day off Monday, July 5, 2010…I’ll be at work forecasting the weather, but not from the NBC17 studio.  Since most of America is going to in their backyard by the barbeque pit, I figured I would do the same.

So, tune in Monday night at 6 & 7  p.m. on NBC17 to see your 7 day forecast and weather or not I burn down my house as I fire up the barbeque pit from my backyard.  I’ll also be sharing my famous hamburger recipe!

Happy 4th of July!!

See you Monday!

Cheapest Propane Tank Refill In The Triangle

July 4th update!

Barbecue season is in full swing and it’s probably time to think about refilling your propane tank.  Unless you use good ole fashioned charcoal, there is nothing worse than running out of propane half way through cooking up some burgers or steaks.

It seems like everywhere you go; whether it’s a home improvement store, the grocery store, the gas station or your doctor’s office…everyone offers a propane tank exchange.  So, over the past few weeks while running errands I’ve taken note of what places charge for a propane exchange.  Here is what I found from lowest (cheapest) to highest (most expensive).  Let me know if you find any others…especially if they are cheaper!

Happy grilling!

Wal-Mart $17.82
Walgreens $18.99
Home Depot $19.97
Lowe’s Home Improvement $20.04* (after tax)
Kroger $20.99
Exxon Gas Station $21.99
Food Lion $21.99
Harris Teeter $21.99
Kangaroo Gas Express $21.99
Lowes Food $21.99
Fast Lube Plus $22.99

Behind The Scenes At The National Hurricane Center

The day after Tropical Storm Alex formed in the Caribbean, I was lucky enough to be inside the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida for a behind the scenes tour.  I was in Miami for the American Meteorological Society’s Broadcast Conference and just like in elementary school, we got to take a field trip.  What made the field trip that much more exciting was that there was an active tropical system…so there was lots to talk about.

The pictures below tell the best story of what we saw, but in 1995 the National Hurricane Center moved into the the huge communication fortress that you see below.  With no fewer than ten satellites on the roof and walls no thinner than three feet thick, it can withstand a category three hurricane (and likely more).

The director of the National Hurricane Center, Bill Read, and his staff were nice enough to show us around, brief us on the current tropical situation and even pose for a few pictures.  The most interesting room, was also the smallest…it was the briefing room.  It is in this sound proof communication room that Director Read will brief officials with FEMA, the White House and even the President.  But while that technology was quite advanced and while this place had more flat screen computer monitors that Best Buy…much of what they look at on a computer is duplicated on paper for reference just in case.

Thanks again to the NHC for their great hospitality!

VIDEO: Oklahoma City Softball Sized Hail

You occasionally hear reports of hail that is “softball sized”, but do you really know what that’s like?  We have all held softballs in our hands, but imagine those objects coming out of the sky.  That’s exactly what happened in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 16, 2010.  Thousands of homes and cars were damaged.  Below is the amazing video.

Things really get going about one minute in…check it out!

Using the DOG Furminator on the CAT

We have been proud owners of the Furminator (FOR DOGS) for years now, but earlier this week we turned it into Furminator FOR CATS!  Apparently, for our black cat, Midnight, it was long overdue!  Here are the results…

IMG_1972

Midnight (who stars at the top of this blog), seemed to like about 95% of the haircut, but he wasn’t too thrilled with the final 5%.  He declined comment after the event.  But for a 15+ year old cat…he sure does look like a million bucks!

Gulf Oil Spill Over North Carolina

The BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico has dominated the news lately.  You hear a lot of different numbers being thrown out about how much oil has leaked…but how much is 5 million gallons or how big is 2500 square miles.

Thanks to Google, we now have an idea.  Here is what the oil spill would look like if it was placed right on top of central North Carolina.

You can make your own map with the oil spill over ANY CITY IN THE WORLD.  Check out the site here.

VIDEO: My Dreaming Dog

At least once a week, my dog takes a cat nap and has some wild and crazy dream.  For once, my camera was close to capture it on video.  It looks like this dream is all about a nice trot in the back yard.  This is tame compared to some of the dreams where she is having a knock down, drag out fight with our cat…but it’s still humorous.  Enjoy!
