Shred-It Shreds Almost Everything

NBC17, SunTrust and Shred-It teamed up for our third Shred-It Event Saturday in Raleigh and Durham.  Here are some of the highlights of the day’s events, including an attempted shredding of something only a Diaper Genie would be proud of!

The World was stationed at the Durham location on what turned out to be a cloudy and dry Saturday.  This is the third time NBC17 has put on this event, but the first time we had the event at two different locations.  The Durham location had as estimated 700 people drop off documents dating back from as much as thirty years ago.  As you can imagine, when you have documents from that far back, there are bound to be some other things that get mixed in.  More on that later, first, here are some pictures from the day’s events…(somewhere along the way the past few months the pictures have vanished…I added them back at the end of the post)

The Durham location had three trucks set up (Raleigh had five).  The Shred-It trucks are made in Canada, which is where the company is headquartered.

People from around the area would bring their documents in boxes and bags and then the Shred-It employees would dump them into a bin…

where these scary looking grinders would take care of the rest.  So, that little shredder you have in your office at home…it may take you two minutes to shred twenty pages; it takes this thing two seconds to do just as much.

NBC17 employees Charlie, Jillian, Helene and Feathers (the NBC17 mascot) where all there to lend a hand.  Truth be told, I’m not really sure if Feathers is an employee as much as he just shows up at NBC17 events where there are food and “chicks.”

Meteorologist Bill Reh and anchor Sharon Tazewell work the crowd.

Morning anchor Donald Jones, News Director Nannette Wilson (The World’s boss) and photojournalist Rod Baker help pull together a live shot from the Durham location.

Now, back to the Diaper Genie story.  As you can imagine, if people are bringing us bags and boxes of documents that may date back thirty years, there are bound to be some other things getting mixed in.  Some of the more interesting things we came across were a man’s wallet (with a social security card), a TV remote control, fingernail polish, coins, rocks and last but not least…a used diaper!!!

Yes, it’s true, while going through one of the bags of documents, The World came across another bag with not one, but two diapers.  I did not investigate enough to determine if they were clean or dirty, but truth be told, I didn’t really want to know.  I proceeded directly to the nearest trash can, found some hand sanitizer and got back to work.

FYI…next spring when we shred again…leave the rocks and diapers at home!

Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a great event once again!

Hello Wes,

Your article on the Shred It Event was very interesting. I was looking for a place local people could carry old mail and etc to have shredded and pulled this article up on your web site. When will the next event of this type be coming up? We would love to know. I have spent several hours just doing this very thing at home. What a nightmare.

Thanks so much. This article was very informative.
