Stormy Mother’s Day…Again!?

Storms will be rolling across North Carolina Thursday night and Friday morning, but we could have more of the same and maybe even worse this Sunday for Mother’s Day!  With brunch reservations and about six outdoor college graduations this weekend…weather could definitely make or break it!

The weather this weekend could be a repeat performance from the Mother’s Day severe weather outbreak on May 14, 2006. The May 14th event was a significant outbreak resulting in 65 warnings from the National Weather Service in one day. The 2006 event resulted in nearly 100 reports of severe weather including hail up to two inches in diameter, one F1 tornado, 3 F0 tornadoes and packets of straight line wind damage.

In addition to the damage above in 2006, an F1 tornado touchdown was confirmed just north of Broadway in Lee County by a National Weather Service survey team. Winds were estimated at 100 MPH with path damage of one half mile long and 100 yards wide.

Keep an eye to the sky the next few days!  Happy Mother’s Day and congratulations to all the graduates!
