2008 Hurricane Forecast Coming Thursday

Hard to believe the 2008 hurricane season is two weeks away when I remember talking about the snow and ice of winter like it was yesterday.

noaa.jpgThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, doing business as the National Hurricane Center) will release its 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook on May 22, 2008.  The government will put on a show at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.  This is where the famous hurricane hunter airplane is based.  That same hurricane hunter will serve as the backdrop for the news conference starting at 11:00 a.m. EDT. Not only will the hurricane hunter be there, but so will several high ranking officials from NOAA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

hurricane.jpgI find it a little odd that the government is making such a big deal about releasing the forecast the same year they said they are trying to de-emphasize long range forecasting for things like the hurricane season.  In fact, if you notice, they officially call their yearly hurricane forecast, an outlook.  Technically, an outlook is the correct term since is looking out so far…but for most people…it’s a forecast.  NOAA fears that long range forecasts give people a false sense of hope or fear and could lead them to not prepare like they should.  Either way…you know we will be covering the numbers that come out Thursday just like the rest of the news media around the country.

Get the forecast here when it is released.
